The Grand Tour - Day 3

Today started sunny and cloudless and the hotel breakfast was amazing so really nothing could have been improved on.

Wow! Memmingen is a very beautiful town indeed. Being on the intersection of two main trading routes the town became wealthy early on and was granted free city status about a thousand years ago which let it levy its own taxes on passing trade.

Consequently many grand buildings were raised and the town was encircled by walls with towers at the gateways.  Much of this is still in existence and has been further embellished by frescos which make it a joy to walk around. In fact by early afternoon I had even stopped singing "The English Are Best" in my head.

There is a small river running through the town in man-made channels and this is full of nice fat trout. Every year there is a festival where men of the town jump in and try to catch the fish with their bare hands.  The one who catches the biggest one is crowned the Fisher King.

Lindau Gate

Frogge took me on a lovely tour of the town and the parks and I could see why he loves this place so much.

Every four years here the Wallenstein festival commemorates events in the town from 1630. Lots of re-enactors both local and invited from abroad attend and Frogge has taken part in this several times since the 1980s.  It was lovely to see him so happy to be back somewhere that he has such happy memories of.

In the evening we met up with a couple of Frogge's friends, Wolfgang and Gerhard but I'm afraid I went to bed pretty early and left the men to reminisce.
